Following on from my previous talk at BSides Perth 2023, I'm back to provide more interesting updates on receiving and decoding satellite transmissions! Topics will include X band weather satellite reception (both LEO and GEO), looking for Chinese spaceplanes and instead finding Chinese spy satellite networks, as well as attempting to receive Deep Space Network (DSN) targets. An update on the wider state of satellite receiving opportunities will also be provided.
The current generation of X band weather satellites are the primary constellations providing high resolution satellite data which contributes to weather forecasting. Information on (and products of) these low earth orbit services from the United States and China will be included. Attention will also be paid to South Korea's GEO-KOMPSAT-2A X band UHRIT service in geostationary orbit.
This talk will primarily cover details regarding X band satellite transmissions but attention will also be paid to S and L band services as well.
